Heather Moseman, DIY Contributor

Heather Moseman of Houston, Texas is “someone” to just about everyone.  She’s mom to two adorable (seriously a-dor-a-ble!) kiddos, wife to one blessed man, daughter to one fortunate mom, granddaughter to two loving grandparents, friend to countless women and dearest of friends to yours truly.  She’s a business owner, entrepreneur and custom clothing designer (Tiger Plums).  Remove all of these titles though, and you’ll find one remarkably beautiful woman full of love, overwhelmed by mercy, overcome with joy and overtaken by a radiant gleam!  Meet now, the woman whose DIY crafts you’ll want to add to your to-do list immediately, Mrs. Heather Moseman.

HEATHER MOSEMAN: DIY CONTRIBUTOR, SEASHINE ONLINE MAGAZINE

SS: Between mothering your two young boys, chaperoning their class trips, managing your own custom clothing line, keeping your home running, taking care of two sweet dogs, two baby ducks, and now two Webkins … I’m just not sure how we made it to your agenda.  How in the world do you manage your schedule?  Any secrets you can share with us?

HM: Ha!  Coffee is a mom’s best friend, I say — at 6:30 AM and then again at 3:00 PM.  I gave up coffee shop coffee to save money when I began staying home with my boys again, but recently I’ve splurged on a can of Ready Whip to top off my vanilla caramel cup of joe!  Let’s see what else?  SLEEP!  I have been known to sew until 2:30 AM simply because I’m too busy with my sons during the day to work on my projects, but I have learned that lack of sleep just makes for an unproductive next day.  And, being behind all over again, just defeats the purpose of working late.  Consequently, I have learned to stop sewing/crafting at a decent hour and get some shut eye.  I pace myself now and prioritize EVERYTHING.  How important is a shower today??  (Ha, I do shower, but you get the idea.)  One other important thing I’ve learned is that if I work too long on one project, I become frustrated, make mistakes and, ultimately, begin to resent the project, itself.  Everything I make deserves my complete attention and tender care, so now I set realistic expectations for myself and only take on projects I know I can complete without stressing.  I’ve always prayed over each little shirt or onesie by name, and I want to continue to do so.  I gently wrap each of my products up in tissue paper, tie a sweet bow around it, give it a big squeeze and send it on its way.  All of my projects are my little plums — my little tiger plums.

SS: Tell us more about yourself.  What do you enjoy doing in your spare time (if you have any), and what are you most passionate about?

HM: If by “spare time” you mean when everything else in the house is done, all orders are fulfilled, all bellies are full and each of my babes are in bed, I’d say I take walks alone, I dream up new ideas and I pour myself into my friendships and into my relationship with God.  If I can fit a book or even a chapter into any of my days, that is just icing on the cake for me.

SS: Have you always been crafty?  Did you ever imagine when you were younger that you would own your own business and be so successful at something you absolutely love doing?

HM: Always crafty, yes.  In fact, I grew up watching Bob Ross!  Every weekend I would turn on PBS and paint along with him.  I have always been the organizer/planner in my family as well — putting together skits, plays, musicals, and costumes.  I was always referred to as “bossy” when I was younger, but I assure you that I have indeed matured and grown out of those bossy ways. (Wink, Wink!)  When I al little girl, all I ever wanted to be was a mom – a full-time mom, which I am.  I have these deep rooted desires to create and craft, too though, so how great is it that I can now run Tiger Plums from home with my boys?!  Perfect.

SS: From children’s clothing and accessories to home accents and centerpieces, you can do it all, and could, justly, be coined a DIY Diva (minus the attitude)!  Where do you find inspiration for your unique projects?

HM: A lot of my ideas start with the question, “How can I make this, and save money?”  I research a lot though, too.  I look through every magazine I can get my hands on as I like to follow the current color trends.  I also love to “pick” brains.  My girlfriends are the best.  My customers are as well though!  Many of them send ideas directly to me.  A teacher, for example, who placed a children’s order sent a photo of her friend, a fellow teacher, to me.  The teacher was wearing a custom shirt.  What an idea?!  This photo actually led to brand new concept line for adults that I’ll be rolling out soon.  And, again, it just came from a photo someone sent me!  Amazing.

SS: Tell us about your professional and educational experience.

HM: I have had the privilege to serve on staff at some of the greatest churches and non-profit ministries/organizations in Houston throughout the past 15 years (between the births of my two sons).  That is my passion – serving God and serving others.  I love that I can now do that through my own business.

SS: What is your FAVORITE DIY tool, and where might we pick one or two of those up?

HM: You’re going to laugh, but a glue stick and a small pair of scissors from the dollar store are my favorite go-to items.  When I’m cutting fabric letters, little birdie feet or even owl noses, I need to make some very small cuts, and the dollar store pointed tip scissors are the best!  And let’s just face it, girls, what can’t a glue stick fix (temporarily, at least)?!  I even keep a stick in my car.  You just never know when you’ll need it!

SS: Do you have a favorite store you could suggest to ladies looking for good fabric?  These days fabric seems hard to come by!

HM: My go-to fabric store is It’s a Stitch in Houston.  One of my favorite things to do when I am out of town though is visit local fabric/quilt stores to find new fabrics.  I am like a kid in a candy store, girls!  I’d like one yard of everything!!

SS: Tell us about Tiger Plums.  How did this line come about, and where do you see it going?

HM: It all started with a burp cloth I saw years ago.  It was just an ordinary cloth diaper with adorable fabric stitched on.  Again, I thought, “How can I make that for gifts and save money?”  I had a sewing machine gifted to me, I took a few sewing classes and … there ya go!  It all flourished from there!  As for the future of Tiger Plumbs — I have so many ideas, I just need to find the time to create them all and photograph them, too!  Some of my favorites include those adorable custom teacher tees I mentioned earlier, some fabulous 4th of July items, and some “too cute” summer dresses.  And, ruffles!  I’ve started incorporating the cutest, most feminine ruffles into my girls lines, and they’re a hit!  As for the name, “Tiger Plums” was my little sister’s nick name growing up.  She passed away in 2007, and “Tiger Plums” simply reminds me of her tenderness and youthful energy.  Instantly, without any thought, my tag line became “Cute name with a BIG heart.”  That was her.
